Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is when a person stops breathing in their sleep, then suddenly breathes again with a gasp. Signs of sleep apnea include fatigue and sleepiness during the day, snoring, and weight gain. Sleep apnea can also be caused by being overweight, making this disorder a double-edged sword.

Restless Leg Syndrome

Tingling or numbness in the legs can make it very difficult to fall asleep. Periodic Leg Movement Disorder is a similar affliction that also leads to leg cramps and restlessness. In addition to these disorders, sleep problems like snoring, sleepwalking, nightmares, and teeth grinding (bruxism) can cause a variety of problems for patients who suffer from them

Parasomnia

Unusual or unwanted physical activities during sleep, such as sleep talking, sleepwalking, sleep paralysis, or night terrors

How Can a Neurologist Help?

By examining the relationship between your brain and nervous system, a neurologist tracks down the cause of your sleep issues. Sleep medicine and disorder treatment begin with a sleep study where you will be monitored to determine what sleep disorder you suffer from. Then, a neurologist develops an appropriate treatment plan.
The treatment plan will depend upon your symptoms, medical history, and underlying condition causing the sleep disturbance. Based on this data, you may receive:

  • Devices to help with breathing during the night, including a CPAP machine that delivers airflow, or simple oral appliances that open the airway.
  • Medications to aid you with your sleep, control associated anxiety, or treat health conditions that may be causing disturbances to your sleep.
  • Recommendation for therapy, including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) to aid in relaxation.
